John Horsey set up business as the UK ’s first Professional Flyfishing Guide 14 years ago and in that time has been inundated with demands for his services. Several years ago, he decided to expand the business in order to cater for the ever increasing demands of the modern-day fishing public.

There are times during the season when John is guiding seven days a week on his home waters of Chew and Blagdon. Due to the demands on one person's time, it became apparent that John needed some assistance.

John enlisted the help of top local angler Dave Wheeler, who is an expert on both Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes . Dave also makes the best boats seats that money can buy and John uses these seats for all his Guiding Services. Dave has fished on the Competition Circuit for many years and has true "hands on" experience of the sport.

Whatever the weather conditions and regardless of the fishes' enthusiasm to take the fly, a day with a Professional Guide can only help to make your fishing more enjoyable and ultimately more successful.

Corporate Days

" I get invited to plenty of Corporate functions, but this is the first time that I have actually learnt something new from the experience. I am definitely hooked (pardon the pun)"
Nick Morse, Sony Ericsson Corporate Day at Avon Springs

Litton Reservoir

This is the type of compliment that often follows our Corporate Fly Fishing Days. Rather than watching a football match or betting on racehorses, corporate clients are actually taught the basics of a new sport. Many even catch their first ever trout!

Corporate parties usually contain a mix of experienced and inexperienced fly anglers. Whatever the level of expertise, John's facilities are equipped to look after all categories. Casting a fly is the hardest aspect of the sport, so expert tuition will be provided "off the water" at the start of the day. Full tackle can be provided, including all terminal tackle and flies.

Corporate Days on the large lakes usually involves fishing from boats using the time-honoured method of "loch style drifting". This is certainly the best option for experienced clients.

However. large lakes such as Chew and Rutland can be a daunting prospect for new comers to the sport. Although the facilities at such venues are first class, one of the objects of Corporate Fishing Days is to let the guest experience the thrill of catching their first trout.

This is where Small Stillwaters provide a useful role. There are plenty of these small fisheries throughout the UK and many are situated close to our own towns and cities.

These smaller fisheries are normally carefully landscaped and often set amidst beautiful scenery. They are more intimate than the bigger waters and can sometimes be a better bet for groups of business clients often providing far better opportunities for them to hook their first fish on a fly. Fishing normally takes place from the bank where it is much easier to give real "one to one" tuition and advice.

Depending on the size of the party, it is often possible to book the entire fishery for your exclusive use on the day.

John can also provide Corporate River Fishing Days, on some of the top Chalk Streams in the South of England. Due to the size of the Beats, these days are often restricted to smaller groups.

Flyfishing on the River Test

Catering at Corporate functions is a critical factor. Depending on requirements, the provision of food and drink can range from a simple barbecue, to hot cooked meals in the Fishing Lodge, through to full silver service under a Marquee.

Whatever your requirements, why not treat your business clients to a wonderful day out in beautiful surroundings, where they can learn the delights of casting a fly to rising trout? John and his team of expert guides will organise the entire package, including choice of venue, catering, drinks and equipment and keep the whole package within your specified budget.

A day’s flyfishing with John Horsey is designed to be a stress-free experience. Travelling long distances can be tiring, so why not book an overnight stay in the luxury of the Carpenters Arms, one of the finest country Inns in the Chew  Valley.

Better still, this is the ideal opportunity for husbands and wives or complete families to stay at a lovely country inn for the weekend, enjoying the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Fly Fishing Abroad

John has fished in many different parts of the World, including New Zealand, the Bahamas, Canada, America, Dominicon Republic, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Sovakia, Tasmania and Australia.

Through his extensive travels, he has fishing acquaintances in many different countries; many of whom are Professional Fishing Guides. John can arrange trips abroad in pursuit of more exotic species such as Bonefish, Tarpon, Jack Cravalle and Barracuda.

These trips are not as expensive as you may think and some of the best saltwater fly fishing is just an hour's drive from Disney World in Florida. Not a lot of people know that.........! If John cannot make the trip himself, he has connections with many other guiding services Worldwide, who will pander to your every need - well almost!

Fly fishing can be so complicated at times. Weather conditions often dictate how and when you fish on a certain day. The permutation of fly patterns and fly lines is endless. At what depth are the fish feeding today? Get the picture?

Due to the incredible variety of techniques, venues and rigs available to the modern-day fly fisher, it is almost impossible to come up with a "typical guiding day". It therefore follows that it is hard to arrive at a typical cost for the day. John likes to tailor the day according to his client's wishes.

Generally however, to give you some idea of the likely costs, a standard day afloat can cost as little as £200.00 inclusive of all fishing fees and boat charges. This represents great value for money, especially when you take into consideration that the cost of a boat on Chew would normally be £59.00 without any guiding expertise!

Fishing does not start from the boats until 10.00am and  John's normal working day ends at 6.00pm. If you wish to continue fishing after he leaves, then the boat is yours. Alternatively John will also stay for the "Evening rise", but there will be an additional charge for this period.
